I'm having a real hard time deciding what to call this one. When I shot the reference video for this recently created artwork from the balcony of my hotel room in St. Germain in 2008, I noticed that the young man was dressed stylishly grungy and the Parisian woman, with billowy pants and blue scarf and sharp haircut was dressed very fashionably, as well, just in a very different vein than her friend. I painted this 30" X 40" oil painting with an impasto mark that is not always easy to reproduce in the .jpg, so there is an advantage to seeing the work in person, experiencing the flat and glossy, thick and thin areas of paint and the depth of the processing of the surface is more evident. Blog Post Got Me On T.V. And In The Newspaper

I never expected that a self-authored post about my upcoming painting exhibit could garner such publicity! Both CNN Headline News: SoCal News and The Daily News newspaper found my post on the Valley News web site, independent from each other, and conducted further interviews with me about my newest painting series, Overviews.

I think that part of the reason that this post successfully got me the publicity that I was shooting for is that I chose a good title, "Encino Artists Paints People From Above" instead of "Warren Keating Has Solo Show At M.J. Higgins". Also, I just stated simply the truths about my work, telling the story of what happens "behind the scenes" when I create my art. I wasn't afraid to reveal "magician's secrets" about my process. The whole time writing the story in words that the layman could understand.

A crew from TimeWarner cable's SoCal News, spent two hours here last week shooting a 2-minute segment. A couple of days later, I got a call from The Daily News about running a story on me this Sunday. While the gallery sent out most of the publicity to the art pubs and the L.A. Times, I sure am glad that I put that post up on the Valley News site.

My latest works, Private Eye's View, are the result of collecting photographs and video of unwitting subjects from balconies in France, digitizing them on computer and painting them on canvas.

This series brings together many elements that artists have explored throughout the 20th Century: abstract naturalism, expressive realism, narrative painting, photography and video. In each work, we find organic shapes of foreshortened figures forming dynamic relationships with the patterns and walkways of their urban environments. Opposing elements of photography and abstraction somehow come together as perfect partners in this blending of 20th century painting ideas; abstraction, expression and narration with 21st Century technology; digitized
video, satellite surveillance and internet voyeurism. Expressionistic mark-making depicts walking subjects, stop-action, mid-step in thick paint that renders motion in the form of video scan lines and pixel artifacts. I painstakingly selected the exact frame, from hundreds, that tells the story of each character, and rendered the digital nature of each image in a painterly style depicting a privileged view of a private moment.
